re: Digital Pinhole Was: Long live WPPD 2009!

I'm dying to try pinhole with one of the larger
medium format digital backs. Something oddly
appealing about the concept of using a $30,000
digital back and a hole in metal from a discarded
cola can as a lens.

Hey Taco,

Glad you got overruled on digital pinhole... -:)
My submission was digital pinhole...

I agree that *"digital pinhole" is a conceptual
aberration*.
and so is digital photography.

But they both exist
and they offer a wide spectrum of possibilities
for a different type of imaging.

I find digital pinhole difficult do deal with
because the response of the image is very
different from silver-based
pinhole.
The very small size of the CCD results in a
magnification of the pinhole
softness
to the point of turning it into an unpleasant blur.
Also, the small CCD turns the fixed focal +/- 50mm
into a medium-telephoto
making it very difficult to work close to the subject.
Stil, some interesting results can be obtained
see the page on Marie-Noelle Leroy's blog
http://foto-grafik.blogspot.com/2008/04/un-qubquois-paris.html

If you let your imagination loose,
you can get some much more interesting results.
eg Marilyn marilys Davis-Moore's work at the
pinhole exhibition in Le
Bourget this spring
where she worked with digital and a grossly
oversized pinhole.
The result is a very impressionistic image.

All in all, I would venture to say that there is
as much difference
between ... digital and silver-based pinhole
as there is between ... pinhole and lens photography!

The debate is open!
