Eric,

One possibility is to make a portable ice fishing shack or shanty and make
it light-tight. If you google or search the internet for "ice fishing
shanty" or something similar, you'll find some plans or get some ideas.

Here is a link to one camera obscura on ice made by Chip Lindberg.
http://www.pinhole.com/archive/415
This shack was hexagonal and pretty complicated to set up and take down.
Last year Chip made one that was rectangular - much easier to work with.
Oddly enough, plywood is not light-tight, so Chip lined the inside of the
shanty with opaque material.

These ideas get away from a walk-in obscura, but here they are anyway:
Eric Nelson made a box (for indoor use) that sounds similar to Ingo's. It
had openings on top that were covered with rubylith. This acted like a
safelight so paper negs could be developed safely and students could see the
development in process.

If you ever get to the H.H. Bennett museum in Wisconsin Dells,
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/hhbennett/
they have a "portable darkroom" that Bennett used to develop glass plates in
the field. It is a large box on a stand with ruby glass on one side so
Bennett could watch as the negs developed.

Hi Eric, Hi Chuck,

I've made the same gear from an box of aluminium 60cmx40cm and 40cm high. I
cut a big hole in the box and mount the opening
from a changing-bag lighttight with a frame of tin and some srews. Then I
mount a small and cheap infrared-camera in top inside the box. The monitor
(wireless) I taped outside the box. I develop the films and paper in small
trays, the students can see all wat I do. It works pretty and is easy to
transport. If you need some images I'll mail to your adress.

LG, Ingo
