Thom--I teach pinhole in my high school photography class. We use Ilford
Multigrade IV RC Deluxe Glossy 4x5. It gives excellent results. There
are no markings on the back. I like the glossy instead of the pearl for
contrast results and it is easier for the kids to identify the "emulsion"
side of the paper.
Last year I bought the cheapest paper I could find at Photo Warehouse (I
think it was just called "Photo Paper Glossy"--kind of like cheap
American wines). I was very surprised. The results were a bit more
contrasty than Ilford and the development time was longer, but in a "mass
production" set up with 125 kids a day pushing through the darkrooms it
worked fine.
Also, the size problem becomes an issue. Paper size is not as exact as
film size. I always have a problem with buckling paper in a negative
holder.
Another also, I created an instruction booklet for building a pinhole
camera out of Crescent Mat Board. If anyone is interested in (hopefully)
clear instructions to build a 4x5 pinhole camera just email me and I'll
send a PDF file.
thanks, joe baltz
