There are 2 reasons I like them...
a. they're already round so I don't have to glue up sides
b. They're round so they lose a little bit of wind resistance.
It is possible to make them crease but that much force would crush foam core
all to heck...
I'm looking forward to your thoughts George. You always come up with pretty
cool ideas.

I have made cameras from the size of a 35mm cannister to 16X20" and can tell
you that the large size is about as unwieldy as it gets. I made the large
one out of foam core and wind became a real problem (especially with the
longer exposure times). I considered making one out of wood, but decided
not to because of the weight.
I do like Andy's idea of using sono-tubes. I've never heard of these before
and will see if my local Home Depot carries them. If the cardboard is
heavier than the foam core (almost certainly the case) and lighter than wood
then this could be an excellent compromise.
