I have made cameras from the size of a 35mm cannister to 16X20" and can tell
you that the large size is about as unwieldy as it gets. I made the large one
out of foam core and wind became a real problem (especially with the longer
exposure times). I considered making one out of wood, but decided not to
because of the weight.
I do like Andy's idea of using sono-tubes. I've never heard of these before
and will see if my local Home Depot carries them. If the cardboard is heavier
than the foam core (almost certainly the case) and lighter than wood then this
could be an excellent compromise.
