Hi Paul,
Why don't you start off with some cyanotypes? A very easy process to
learn, you could be up and running in a day - and quite non-toxic
too, take a look here for starters:

If you do venture into the world of alt-processes, make sure you've
 got plenty
of time. Most of my free time has been spent learning Bromoil and
 I've finally
made a few prints that I am not completely embarrassed to show
 someone else.

As far as the Journal of Post-Factory Photography is concerned,
 getting the
series is a must for anyone going in that direction - great
 information in
there.
