I've subscribed to this list for several years, but have never commented
on the post. Now that it threatens to go away I feel like the typical
Johnnie Come Lately begging, "Gee, guys, don't quit. I really like what
you do. Wish I had said that before." Like most of us reading this site
we enjoy it for several reasons: It comes automatically, no muss, no
fuss. It's filled with interesting discussions by interesting people.
It's also a very dignified group--No F words, CS's, etc, etc. We all
belong to a very select, miniscule group--we love pinhole photography. I
doubt there is a stranger more eclectic group of humans than Pinholers.

I teach High School Photography in Joliet, Il and am here to tell you
that interest in Handmade cameras and darkroom processes is passionately
high among young kids. We use the Pinhole Camera for a full eight weeks
in our beginning courses.

It is amazing what kids learn from this simple box. I teach them most of
the darkroom techniques and tricks with their pinhole pictures. Then,
they write a short story, illustrate it with pinholes and lay everything
out on Adobe InDesign, producing an eight page book. They learn
photoshop and desktop publishing basics without ever touching a "real
camera". By the end of the semester most kids prefer darkroom to
digital. We really don't get into digital until the second year.

I don't know what I would do without those little boxes. They are great
fun.

Anyway--thanks for all the interesting discussions along the way. I hope
it continues. Joe Baltz
