The way I designed the Populist, you can rewind back into the original
canister, just make sure to cover the wind hole when you move the winder to
the rewind hole.
I must say I've never had any problem with film tensioning with either the
35mm Populist or the 120 Populist. The internal dividers in the camera front
hold the film pretty tightly against the back and keep the film tight. I've
never even had the film unwind on the take-up spool.
