Why consider paper negatives #354
What paper to use? #356
Paper negatives are the best way to go for cost. Only a print quality
darkroom, with correct lighting for the paper, and paper negative can be
hand processed by inspection. I use poly contrast papers with no filter.
Poly contrast paper has a natural hardness filter built in your light
source, to use to your advantage. If Full sunlight #2 hardness, over cast
day #2.5 hardness, full shade #3 hardness and deep shade #3.5 to #4
hardness. This is due to the loss of yellow and tilted towards violet light
source from sun to full shade. As you see poly contrast type paper is self
correcting for hardness, if you give it a chance. Poly contrast paper makes
a perfect recording medium, for paper negatives.
With the automatic contrast correction in the paper the final printing in
most of my face to face contact prints, have printed best with an hardness 2
to 2.5 filter on PolyMAX, Polycontrast IV, or AGFA 310.
Unless you are working with flat, overcast lighting most of the pictures
will be over exposed in the high light areas or no detail in the heavy
shadows. This is where the artist comes in to play. Over expose and blow
out the detail in the bright areas or no real detail on the shadow areas.
My tables have ASA 44 to 1.4 for paper with accepted reciprocity for
paper as Kodak defines it, with time correction for color temperature of the
light source and contrast difference in the subject. Note Paper reciprocity
is a nice slow off set curve as compared to old formulary films and some
newer high speed.
The most resent f/180, f/250, and f/360 table for paper negatives
Especially Polycontrast IV RC, which can be used for AGFA 310 and PolyMAX.
AGFA 310 appears to shoot 1/2 stop slower for non bright sun condition.
These are the findings of shooting over 200 sheets of each photograph papers
above as pinhole camera 8x10 paper negatives, for preferred scanning in or
face to face contact printing. AGFA 310 currently is watermark free.
