email etiquette

Sorry to post this to the list, but I don't remember how to get a hold
of the list maintainer.

A member of this list (the maintainer can contact me for details) is
running a badly designed mail filter. It is set up to bounce back
mail received from new senders, requiring the sender to reply to the
bounce. In general this is a bad idea[1], but on a mailing list this
is extraordinarily bad. If you don't want to receive email don't
subscribe to mailing lists and don't make senders jump through hoops.

I now await a bounce of this message.

Footnotes:

[1] Spammers get paid by their clients based on the number of messages
sent, not the number of messages received. At a minimum this sort
of filter doubles network traffic, once to send the message and a
second time to bounce it. If someone were to actually follow
through on this filter the reply to the bounce winds up tripling
the amount of traffic. A second mark against this sort of filter
is that Spammers lie. Chances are if the message were spam you
would bounce it back to an innocent third party, not the spammer.
This increases the amount of unwanted junk in people's mailboxes.
