Guy and all,

Some links to Vera Lutter's work. As Guy mentioned, Vera Lutter has received
international status as an artist - her pinhole work seems to be part of a
larger body of exploration in the media arts - she is also at trained sculptor.
This might account for her interests in larger works that incorporate both the
camera as a sculptural object and the subject (architectural landscapes) as a
sculptural object. One of the links also talks about Graham's mobile camera
obscura.

It's always interesting to reflect upon why one image is "valued" more than
another - is it really the image? - or the conceptual behind the image. Much
of today's "artworld" is conceptually based - the image does not "stand alone"
- it is instead dependent upon "non-exhibited" qualities - and it is these
non-exhibited qualities that determine "value." Arthur Danto's essay "Works of
Art and Mere Real Things" sets a thesis that to see something as art is
dependent upon artistic theory and interpretation - "nothing is an artwork without
an interpretation that constitutes it as such" - that accounts for Warhol's
"Brillo Box 1964" to be classified as art - based on "non-exhibited qualities" -
or as Danto also stated in his provocative essay "The Artworld": "To see
something as art requires something the eye cannot descry [discover by
observation] - an atmosphere of artistic theory; a knowledge of art: an artworld."

So back to pinhole - how does that fit into the "artworld?" ..... . . . . .
