traci, if i remember correctly, you have to twist the reel (as if you were loading film) until you hear and feel a *click.*
on my reels, it feels like you're gonna break it, but it doesn't. i can't remember which way you twist unfortunately.
anyways, once it *clicks* then it is loose and the width can be adjusted. then you twist the opposite direction to lock it back in place.
as much as i love steel reels, i've found no better tank/reel system for doing odd sizes (like 127 or 16mm), or even smallish clips of roll film (loaded on from the twisting action...).
