Thank you for your help. My camera was having an issue with not having a lens
on in any mode. It was not working properly and luckily I tried to do this
right after purchasing it. It has now been reformatted and works fine.

Without knowing exactly what the problem is, it is hard to say. However, if
you have the camera in automatic mode then there is no way for it to work, as
you will not have enough light coming to the sensor. Throw things into
manual
and see what happens.
