Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day Efforts Make a Happier Planet
by Gregg Kemp and Tom Miller - April 7, 2005

As the fifth Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, April 24, rapidly
approaches, some noteworthy milestones have been reached on its path
to a happier planet.

As part of the preparation for the 5th Worldwide Pinhole Photography
Day (WPPD), the website has been translated into 2 new languages:
Russian and Turkish. Congratulations and thanks go to Wolfgang Thoma,
this year's Translations Coordinator, to Nick Shuval-Sergeev for
translating the site into Russian, and to Loris Medici for the Turkish
translations. Translating the text of the site into another language
takes many hours, not to mention the mental work and knowledge of at
least two languages.

In addition to these new languages, we are just as fortunate to have a
great team of translators to bring the other languages of the site up
to date. In all, the web site can be navigated and read in 17
languages this year. That's 11 languages more than the United Nations
web site (un.org). This year's translators includes several new
people and several old timers. The full list of translators is listed
on the site at http://www.pinholeday.org/org/team.php .

And, as if that's not enough, Gregg Kemp has converted the entire site
to "Unicode," the standard code page for international languages.
>From now on, all events and gallery submissions support almost every
language on the planet, whether its part of the site or not. While
most of this year's pinhole day participants will post their photos
and describe them using English, you are welcome to enter using your
native language as well.

Check out the events listing at http://www.pinholeday.org/events/. So
far, sixty events have been organized throughout the world to help
celebrate Pinhole Day. These include workshops, exhibits, classroom
student participation and folks planning to gather on April 24 to
patiently photograph together. The irony is they'll be excited while
doing it. Check for an event in your area; if there isn't one,
consider organizing one.

Anyone, anywhere in the world, who makes a pinhole photograph on April
24 can scan it, submit it to the www.pinholeday.org website, and it
will be included in the WPPD 2005 gallery. If you can take part,
excellent. And if not, be sure to check the gallery starting April 24
to see a growing exhibit of exciting pinhole work from across the
globe.ay Efforts Make a Happier Planet
