Matt - in terms of reasonably priced polaroid 4x5
sheet film - I think you're in the wishful
thinking category. What I did was build a good
relationship with a couple of my local
photographic dealers, and they called me when they
had some "out of date" or short dated boxes.
Other than that, the prices seem to be pretty
tightly controlled and consistent across providers.
I stopped using polaroid 4x5 after awhile, because
I found that there were other costs besides the
cost of the film packs. I found that one or two
sheets in every pack would have a problem with
loading and unloading, ruining the image. I had a
couple packs where the images had so much dirt and
dust on them (even when I did an indoor only test
to assure myself that it wasn't dirt in the air
outside) that spotting an image for an hour was
almost a necessity, the dirt and fuzz was hugely
distracting. Right in th emulsion. A few packs
later, I hit another pack that was just horribly
filthy, and that was it.
I've also had this show up in a couple of packs of
pack film in 4x5 and the regular size. QA must be
on the ropes.
If you can go to readyload film (which is still
more convenient than sheet carriers) you can
really save some money. My local shops could sell
me boxes of readyload Fuji and Kodak 4x5
transparency film, outdated or short dated, for
about $40. Relatively minimal color shifts even
at "go have dinner" exposure lengths, where the
Polaroid colors shifted so wildly at even a 1
second exposure that you just had to plan it as an
effect.
