If your tunnel is what I'm thinking of, it could be extreme wide-angle
exposures made with short focal length cameras. Things look like they
explode out from the middle because of the wide angle plus there can
be a stop or two of light fall-off from the middle to the center of
the image causing vignetting.

This images show the exploding and vignetting somewhat.

The "cigar shape" that is often in pinhole images comes from using a
curved film plane. While this statement can be argued with a little:
"pinhole causes no distortion," it is by and large true. The
distortions come from the curved film or paper and sometimes this gets
further exaggerated by the angle of view to the subject.
