There is a newer Epson Perfection 4990 scanner in the pipeline. It
has already been released in some parts of the world (see a review at
<URL:http://www.photo-i.co.uk/>). This scanner seems to have all the
features of the 4870, but can scan up to 8x10 film.
Personally, I think that the Vuescan software is much better than
either the Epson drivers or the Silverfast AI software that came with
my Epson 2540.

It can never hurt to put as much RAM as will fit in your machine.
