I have used the method Eric suggest, last time I did it was 9 years ago!,
just to make sure still works for me I did a slit that turned out to be
about 0.008" in width, this is the method I used.

Cut 2 pieces of mat board, placed a piece of 35mm film in between them (film
in vertical orientation), applied some of the "3M post it note type glue" on
the mat board surfaces, this prevented the brass shim stock from moving too
freely, then it is just a matter of getting 2 pieces of brass shim stock
pressing against the piece of 35mm film and securing them in place with some
tape.
