Can't help you slit-in-shim-stock specifically, as I've never tried
it, but there are excellent alternatives.

I've made many slits using the method that the late Marnie Cardozo
developed. It works great. Marnie's method is described on page 224
of the third edition of Eric Renner's book "Pinhole Photography,
Rediscovering a Historic Technique." It is on page 163 in the second
edition. The method is also described in the "Pinhole Journal" volume
15 number 1. The method uses lith film (available from Freestyle) as
the slit material. When developed in full strength Dektol it is, for
all practical purposes, opaque. You can cut it with a scissors and
trim it with an Xacto knife. The nifty thing is how easy it is to
make slits of various shapes.

In the same issue of Pinhole Journal, there is an article by Jim
Moninger about slits. Here is a quote: "I began by using the classic
pinhole material: brass shim, but found that it's far more practical
to use black, opaque construction paper."
