I have not done this, so it is purely conjecture, but if I were to
do it, I would probably try sliding two pieces of shim together in
the same plane, with some kind of thumbscrew or other mechanism for
tightening them into place, until I'd done tests to see what the
right slit aperture should be. I'd use pieces of shim at right
angles to the slit to keep the slit evenly spaced while I was setting
it up. In other words, I'd bring the two pieces together against
the thickness of the third, tighten the two into place, and slide
the third out, leaving the slit.

But I tend to overengineer.

I will be curious to hear what others do, and what size aperture
people tend to work with. The timing is good; I was just looking at
some images made this way.
