I have to say I think along the same lines as Trevor, Eric. What you
mention sounds more like an imitation of the art form with tools that can
never really give you the same experience or result. But the good thing
about that digital imitation is that someone is being exposed to the process
who might not have been under more traditional means. Whether they choose
to pursue the more visceral, artistic (and I supposed pure) process is then
up to them.
I can also imagine a few ways to build a 'custom' digital cam for pinhole
use that would enable capture of images at extremely wide angles or in a
curved surface (consider arrayed CCD chips - even low res). Not to mention
the flexible diplay 'panels' being developed. I don't imagine it will be
long before we have a flexible digital 'film'. However, you still won't be
able to do salt prints (or other chemical processing) from it directly.
Plus, in Trevor's example, he can manipulate and print his images to film
transparencies without any real degradation within the process, so his
inverted print is as true as his original image capture. Even if he stores
his digital file for years and drags it out a decade later to experiment
with a new alternative process.
Digital isn't everything, but it can be as convenient as refrigeration and
indoor plumbing...

I can see your point if you're using a digital
back...however, i'm using digital materials to make
contact negs...take my 8x10 print, flip it to neg in
PS, then print on a transparency...ready for
cyanotypes gum bichomates, etc...
