Another article and other news

I just posted "Artistic Focus and the Suppression of the Lens" by
Alfred Maskell to my web site (
http://idea.uwosh.edu/nick/oldarticles.htm ) This article is from the
Photographic Quarterly,Vol. II, No. 5. from October 1890. Alfred
Maskell was instrumental in the founding of the Linked Ring Brotherhood
in 1892, a group dedicated to the promotion of photography as fine art
and often associated with the Pictorialist movement. Very little
technical detail here, the emphasis is on the artistic potential of
pinhole photography (and photography in general). 16 pages, 5 x 7.5 in.
(PDF - 584K) About a half inch of the right side of page 20 is missing.
I was waiting to get the replacement page, but am posting it now in
response to a thread on Tom Persinger's F295 discussion forum (
http://f295.tompersinger.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl ). I'm in the process
of getting a replacement which should be posted in a few weeks, and
I'll post to this list when I update it.

Those of you who remember the article that got me started, "Advanced
Pinhole Photography" by H. D'Arcy Power (1905), was missing 4
illustrations at the end. Guy Glorieux graciously provided me with
those images and they are now incorporated into the document. Thanks a
lot, Guy. They include a portrait that he states is a 10 second
exposure and a landscape at quarter of a second!

In other news, the Journalism Education Association is featuring
Pinhole Photography in the Winter 2004 journal ( www.jea.org ) It
includes a reference to my web site as well as a nice piece about WPPD
by Tom Miller.

In a much more local development, I'm having an exhibit of my work at
the Paine Art Center here in Oshkosh ( http://www.thepaine.org/ ) from
October 30 to November 1. I got talked into having proper photographic
digital prints made. It's a little creepy, but the print quality is
recognizably better than the color laser prints I have been looking at.
