I have run across regular black masking tape that is useless. The real stuff is 3M 235, which is really opaque.
It is kinda expensive, approx. $12 US for a 3/4inch x 60 yd. roll. I've gotten it at my local art supply store, but it's also available on-line,
from 3M by the case.

Dick Blick also carries it.
I've also used plastic tapes which come in smaller rolls, but per unit are just as expensive and hard to tear with your bare hands. Most electrical tape doesn't have a positive enough adhesive for most camera building applications.
