Chuck,
I appreciate your efforts to provide this superlative tutorial and look forwarded to the expanded version. What a great presentation of a very practical approach for a super
productive workshop 8 shots x 50 students = 4.5 hrs. It was most inspiring. My mind leaped at the though, I could do that as a first time out project.
I have a few questions about student participation and format. Do you provide guidance to indicate depth of the pin penetration? I also want to clarify that you are using paper
rather than film. Obviously it produces an immediate product.
You mentioned the advantages of pins vs. needles, but observed the tendency for pins to bend. From my metalsmithing days, I used “Nesting” Economy No. 17 Steel pins (300
ct.). They should not break or bend. Unfortunately they have flat heads rather than the nice domed plastic head brass pins available in this era. If I didn’t enjoy pain so much, I
would either use a thimble or cut the pin to the depth of pencil eraser + the required penetration distance, and insert it into a pencil’s eraser to use as a drill handle.
What role does the field darkroom? Is it set up to develop or to reload canisters? As a what if, would a cheap dome tent draped with 6-8 mil black construction plastic sheeting
be less claustrophobic and allow more students? It would also allow the Unit 2 processing table to fit without future modifications to either structure.
You mentioned the bulk film can makes a great 360 panoramic camera. Do you center the pinhole on the lid?
Chuck, again thank you for your efforts.
