Hi Nick & Jan,

To answer:
Also, how do you cut a hole in the canister to install the pinhole.
That plastic can be pretty tough and using a knife sounds dangerous.
Would an electric drill with a quarter inch bit work?

The workshops I have done that are short term like one day I've use 35mm
canisters. I punch a hole in the side 1/2 way down the side of the canister
with either a leather punch[they have a wheel with multi sized punches]. I
have also used a standard metal paper punch. I use cut up soda can for the
lens [3/4" x 3/4"] and pierce a hole using a #7 needle [gently] into an
drawing eraser. I take these on with masking tape since the punched hole is
only 1/4". I have never really been too careful of size of the pinhole. I'm
sort of a poke a hole, shoot, and adjust. If the lens is too big shorten
exposure time, shoot in the shade to reduce light.

My last darkroom on location was a janitors closet in a grade school. We
could squeeze in 4 kids and me. The next year I took one of my high school
TA's and they did the darkroom and I supervised photo shooting. This
workshop involved 60 kids 4th through 8th. I have a small knock down table,
trays. and a clamp-on light with a 15 watt yellow bug light. I encouraged
the students to scan there negatives and print them out. Most scanner
programs wit scan at a high resolution that allows enlarged printing. My
workshop is called "Cheapo cheapo pinhole workshop" It comes from having to
teach art in the high school to 260 students on a $1700 budget. :-)

I have built a sturdier take apart portable darkroom from the idea in Jim
Shull's pinhole book. It fits inside my pickup and will work for two
smaller people.

The big thing is, everybody has the same size container, same lens material,
same photo paper, and chemicals. The fewer the variables the better the
results. I did one workshop where everyone brought their own container and
to say the least it was a headache. I would rather have happy people!

Just a few of my solutions, hope it helps. I work with the KISS
method..Keep It Simple Students

Cheers All,
Chuck Flagg
