Remember that you don't need to insert all the tapered portion of the
needle, you can just insert the very tip of it. Use of a drill press helps
a lot, a dremel on a drill press is ideal for this. Also, you can sharpen
the tip of the needle.

Yes, try using the type of bit with spurs on the outer edge, they should cut
a cleaner hole.
