Good idea - I hadn't thought of that. Today is foggy, so the sun may never make it out. Last night I set things up at 5:30pm, got a partial exposure when it started raining and the wind knocked the can over. I repositioned it after the storm, so I should get a partial double-exposure when I get home. I will give the step tablet idea a try and see where that takes me.
