Hey list,
You must all be completely wiped from the weekend's festivities. I feel
like I spent more hours in the darkroom last week than I have in my
whole life combined.
I ran a two-night + WPPD workshop at the San Francisco Center for the Book
last week. I didn't publicize it much, because it filled early (maxed out
at a dozen students) and because, while we welcomed drop-ins on WPPD, the
Center doesn't have a proper darkroom and we didn't want to be swamped.
I also didn't want to compete with the folks over at the SF Photography
Center, where there is a proper, nay, amazing community darkroom.
Dai, how did that go?
Anyway, you can search om my group's work at the pinhole day site.
This was everyone's first attempt at pinhole, and I think the work is
really quite good and diverse. Everyone modified a Holga the first day
of class and shot a roll or more of film during the week -- I processed
all that on Saturday afternoon -- but most of what was uploaded was
done with containers they brought on Thursday night. Paper negatives,
scanned, then flipped, inverted, and minimally tweaked in Photoshop
before being uploaded. Some people had to leave early, or weren't happy
with their work, and didn't upload, but everyone got something, and if
it weren't for the one-person/one-image rule, there'd be a few more
things up there for our group.
I was thrilled with the possibilities of my two-pinhole Republic of Tea
can (a pinhole at each end) and, among other things, will be refining that
camera during my residency at the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco next
month. (I'll be making images on my own and with visitors on Tuesdays
at the Legion of Honor, and there's a two-part workshop at the de Young
Art Center on Wednesday nights, May 12 and 19).
I'll post more as that unfolds.
There must be some good stories out there, no?
--Eric
