Hi Chuck,

An excellent place to get started is to read the pinhole FAQ:

This has all the basic information you need.

There are some good web sites listed here that may also be helpful:

I would encourage you to build a simple camera if you at all enjoy
making things yourself. There are lots of plans for simple cameras on
the web. Then you can use paper negatives rather than film, and
develop them yourself at home or in a community darkroom. Photo paper
is relatively inexpensive, and you can also make contact prints from
the paper negatives, so you won't need a lot of expensive darkroom
equipment - just some plastic trays and a pane of glass to make the
contact prints (no enlarger is needed).

Depending on where you live, you may be able to buy the photo paper at
a local camera store. If not, Freestyle is one place (west coast).
But there are lots of others. I get most of my supplies (paper, film,
chemicals, etc) from B&H Photo (NY).

These are just some ideas to help you decide how you want to approach
this.
