If I may please hazard to volunteer much ignorance of the Chinese Language:

Witness the Chinese character sequences for
Electron,
Lightning,
electric bell,
electric power,
Telephone,
computer and
Television.

First character is elemental, and the following character(s) describe a
relational accomplishment. There is no mention of the inventors,
where they are from and no importation of syllables. Nothing in them is
irrelevant.

If necessary, abandon concepts of 'zone' and 'Plate' and 'pin' and 'hole'.
Pinhole is pinhole because it's a hole made with a pin.
Zone plate is because it was a glass plate with defined zones.

A pinhole could be called a micro-opening or even a light-choke.
A zone plate is concentric openings of ringed chokes.
A sieve is concentric openings of circular chokes.
The lensless imaging we do could be called Choke Photography.

So, maybe these lens-less lenses ought to be a sequence of characters as it
is in
those electrical gadgets???

I am curious - what is Chinese for 'pinhole'?
