Thanks, Jeff, for bringing Jim Campbell's work to the attention of the
list. As you say, his work is typically video and installation based,
and I will go further and say that a) he is usually lumped in with high
tech artists and b) his positioning of technology at the service of his
vision is just about perfect to my eyes.
Before I go any further, I should say that I doubt that these images
have anything to do with pinhole.
Let's see, what do I know... one thread of Jim's work is related to
futurism, and its early 20th century concern with the representation
of motion in a single image. So these images, and some earlier images,
are a kind of summary of a sequence of video images in a single frame.
At least three of the four images at Graphic Studio (not the cow)
were originally presented in small edition lightboxes (Campbell is a
San Francisco-based artist, represented by Hosfelt Gallery here).
Campbell has also done some "summaries" of well known movies, eg,
condensing the whole of "Citizen Kane" and "Psycho" into a single frame
much as these "dynamism" images.
I had heard that Graphic Studio was planning to do some color
photogravures with Campbell, so I am a *little* disappointed that these
are inkjet prints.
Anyway, take a look at http://hosfeltgallery.com/JimCampbell/ and
Campbell's own site at http://jimcampbell.tv/ for more about this
important, yet non-pinhole, artist. He has had recent shows at the Palo
Alto Art Center and the Matrix Gallery at the University Art Museum in
Berkeley, but he's also had successes at the international biennial
level.
