You can use tap water (I do when mixing for cyanotype). However, the water in
different places is not consistant, and using distilled water ensures that
there will be no nastiness to contend with. If you are having problems, the
first thing to do would be to ensure that your water is not causing the
problem. You should be able to get distilled (and other kinds of "proper")
water at your local grocery store.
