Gustavo,
I too was in the same predicament. I moved from a
large town to a small town and found myself without a
reliable processing lab. Years ago I used a unicolor
film tank and roller base (poor man's jobo)to process
E-6 materials with great success, but I did not want
to worry about keeping the water bath at the correct
temperature each time I had to process. After 20
rolls, it does get old. I had considered purchasing a
Jobo Duolab, as it seems to be the perfect small
darkroom processing unit. After a bit of research I
had to choose between the Nova FP compact (a water
bath processing system) and the Jobo CPE-2 plus. I
purchased the CPE-2 a few weeks ago and I could not be
happier. It keeps the water temp constant and allows
for bi-directional processing. It is a real joy to
process C-41 and E-6 films and it is much more
enjoyable than the water bath tricks.
In processing color film at home you need to have
almost perfect and consistent temperature for the
first step. This means keeping the temperature
constant in the developing tank for 6.5 minutes (for
E-6 process). The best system for this, if you do not
want to go the jobo route is to find one of the old
unicolor film tanks. These units look like an 8x10
paper tank, but it is insulated and it has a piston
device which allows you to convert the tank from 1 to
5 rolls. I previously was able to process 5 rolls at
a time (e-6) with perfect results when used with the
unicolor or beselar motor bases. Hand agitation with
color film is done every 15 seconds I believe - It is
much different than with black and white materials, so
I would definately suggest the motor base.
By the way, now that I have the Jobo, I am selling the
unicolor tank and base on Ebay soon (convenient, eh)
If any of you want it, contact me off list.
