The role of the enlarger is to hold the negative parallel to the board below so
that a light source above can project that image. You can get as elaborate and
expensive as you wish, but that's the bottom line. You should be able to find
a good used enlarger for a few hundred dollars, though you can spend thousands
for the same thing, if you wish. Save your money for a good lens, which will
make all the difference.
