I know that my Nikon FA meters off the film during auto-flash exposure.
I believe that this is the case with all subsequent Nikon SLRs that have
connectors for auto-flash units. The FA also meters after the shutter
button is
pressed in order to determine is actually getting through the iris (that
is, did the
lens stop down to the exact stop that the computer asked for) and adjusts
the exposure accordingly. I don't remember if this is done using the
off-the-film flash sensor or a forward facing sensor in the film
compartment.
I should get the camera manual out and look up the details.

I haven't used a pinhole body cap on the Nikon, but I plan to. (I also
have
one of Guillermo's zone plates sized for an SLR body cap that I need to
mount.)
