I am interested in taking photos of Civil War re-enactors. I will be
shooting in open sun or shade. I would perfer the images to be rather sharp,
faces are what I am concerned about with my exposure time being 45 seconds
on an average. The main camera I use has a focal length of 106.68 mm, a 432
mm pinhole, and I use 4x5 ilford mgIV. The other cameras I use are all
oatmeal boxes. Will build a suitable camera if a different focal length
would be better. I am just beginning in pinhole photography and not ready to
move up to film.

Hello Joe, Me too...Southern by the grace of God.
First, I hope your pinhole diameter is .432 mm and not 432 mm . That
converts to a 17" pinhole, which is a tad large. Otherwise, your 106.68 mm
FL and .432 mm pinhole are the correct measurements. And unless you want a
larger negative, your 4x5 is fine.

Second, have you see Willie Ann Wright's re-enactor series? Très excellent!
She's on the net and also has a space at www.pinholevisions.org

I did some photos like you are talking about at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia.
Several were pinhole with paper negatives. The people are great when you
explain why they are standing still for a couple of minutes. Some do this
perfectly, some of the faces are a tad blurred, but the quality is vintage
Civil War...War of Northern Aggression. ;-)
My particular camera had a 3 inch and a 6 inch FL with .014 inch and .020
inch diameter pinholes respectively, for 4x5 paper negatives.
