jim, if i remember correctly, the first camera to take pictures of the
sun from outside the earth's atmosphere (i.e. in space) was a pinhole
camera mounted to a rocket. the images revealed proof of sun spots and
solar flares, which had previously been conjecture. i discovered this in
an old issue of popular science, found while visiting family over the
christmas holidays. i can't put my hands on the magazine now, and don't
remember the name of the scientist who built the camera, but the article
was very detailed in its explaination of the camera's construction, and
how it worked. if memory serves, the camera had eight discs of film each
with a different pinhole, focal length, and exposure time...
