There is an excellent book by Alan Greene called "Primitive Photography - A
Guide to Making Cameras, Lenses and Calotypes" published by Focal Press.

I paid £22.50 for it here in the UK. It shows how to make a camera and the
dark slide section is very good with some easy solutions to problems. There
is also a flatpack camera to make.
The only this is that the dark slides are quite bulky but it is not
really a problem unless you are hiking up the Everest.
