"pinhole noise", secret holes, and "sampling" grapes

I think there's a good example of the "pinhole noise" that Rusty is talking
about in the preface of Eric Renner's book. It's the image made from a
handbag with a hole cut in it.

I think it has the kind of "secret hole" effect that Lisa mentioned?

Here's my embarrassing contribution to the two topics...

Here's why it happened.. This is a polaroid land camera that I bought for $2
and modified so that the shutter stays open as long as you hold the button
down...

The shutter works great.. except that (a) there's obviously a light leak in
the left side of the frame.. and (b) the pinhole has to be mounted in FRONT
of the shutter which I guess is why I got the "secret hole" effect. :)

Oh.. the last part of the subject.. I got hassled by a security guard when I
was taking that picture. Holding the button down with one hand and holding
the camera still with the other. I had to ask him to read what the
stopwatch around my neck said since I couldn't move. Kind of felt like
getting caught sampling grapes then asking the store employee to hold the
stem while you picked the grapes off of it.

Well, not really.
