The globe is mostly dimming the light, I'd assume. You could probably
obtain the same effect by replacing the on/off switch with an inexpensive
dimmer switch. Make sure you check, once in a while, the area of the bulb
where the glass meets the metal, the internal coating od some bulbs tend to
peel off with time and let unfiltered light through.
