I've got a couple of these too- you can get them at Active Surplus in
Toronto.
Just pulled them out to have a look, you can actually make quite a small
pinhole with the aperture. Getting it to stay in one spot is tricky, perhaps
a bit of brass shim inder the lever part, to increase the friction might
work. To use it as shutter for another pinhole would work nicely, you could
automate it using a microcontroller such as the Basic Stamp, or PIC, to take
unattended pictures.
