RE: Flashing

First, you need to know the Guide Number of the flash you're using, so you
can calculate how much light you're putting on the subject. As for light
sources, if you're working in total darkness, you can paint with light to
illuminate the subject, it's background, whatever, moving the light to
simulate multiple light sources. (here's the key light, here's the fill, i
need a little rim light from back and above) If working in color, get some
gels (you only need scraps, a Rosco swatch book has pieces large enough to
cover a flash lens) and paint with colored light. Just remember that you
need to start with the guide number of the flash and do the math to see how
many pops at what distance you need to register some light on the subject
through your pinhole.

Y'know, this is a LOT of work using flashbulbs, you have to change bulbs for
each pop. In the dark.

|Dear Pinholers,
|I found the discussion on using flash interesting. There's an article
|in Pinhole Journal Volume 6, issue 2 recommending use of flash
|bulbs/cubes on the basis that they were more powerful than most flash
|guns. Unfortunately, at least here in the UK, they're no longer
|available. I've been thinking about using flash for a series of
|portraits and still lifes (?lives) I'm planning. I've converted a
|Pentax to pinhole with an aperture of about f200 and a focal length of
|about 24 mm. I want to shoot in total darkness against a black
|background to emphasize the objects and was wondering how many flashes I
|would need in those circumstances? I'll be using a starblitz flashgun
|with twin flashes and 35 mm film at 200 asa. Should I use it in
|combination with other kinds of lighting and would it be better with a
|white background, i.e. less difficult, ?
|
|Does anyone have any suggestions?
|
|Regards,
|Mark UK
