Hi all !
Pinhole Christmas card swap, Holydays pinhole cards, Christmas Pinhole
cards, Postcards-web...
Already plenty of "subject lines", plenty of posts since September 28th when
Zernike first expresssed his idea...
This is undoubtedly one of the charms of this list - or, rather, of the
pinholers' tribe - to be always creative ! :-)
These last two days, various points of view expressed by several members
showed how wide are the perceptions of everybody about what should be a Xmas
exchange and the way to organize or not organize it...
Now, it seems to me that it's time to analyze all these opinions and try to
draw some conclusions in order to act, since we surely do not wish to
discuss this topic for months...
Following a careful re-reading of all posts of this thread, and trying to
bring a satisfying response to everybody's wishes, I come to the following
suggestion :
Let us set up a 2 level proposition with complete freedom for everyone
interested to participate either in level 1, or level 2, or both levels !
Note that "Level 1 and Level 2" do not carry any notion of hierarchy; I just
use these terms to simplify distinction and we can as well give them a name
so that everybody knows what he is speaking about !
Level 1 = Christmas Pinhole Cards Directory
Level 2 = Spring 2002 Pinhole Print Swap
Now, let's try to specify these 2 completely different pinhole actions!
1] Christmas Pinhole Cards Directory :
Main principles : maximum freedom, maximum pleasure, "self-responsibility"
and self adaptation to individual capacities, desires...
Wholly unformal action with no special requirements; people who wish to
"eventually" receive Pinhole Christmas Cards ( and are "eventually" ready
to send some) just drop their snail mail address before December 31st in the
"C.P.C. Directory". Everyone may drop his (her) address to become a possible
recipient; everybody is allowed to pick somebody's else address to send Xmas
pinhole postcard. The "directory"stays "open" to all members of
pinhole-discussion list.
There are not compulsory requirements; we may just advise to use any form of
"Lensless" photograph. Sizes, subjects, ways of sending (w/wo envelope) are
absolutely free.
There is no need for any moderator or co-ordinator since the C.P.C.
Directory is self-functioning just by everybody's good will.
There is no counting of prints sent / prints received : participants do as
they wish and do not know if they will receive 1, 5, 10 or no cards. There
is no mathematical relation between the number of cards sent by someone and
the number of cards received.
There is no deadline for sending or receiving and...
... nothing prevents this Christmas Pinhole Cards Directory to become a
PERMANENT Pinhole Cards directory.
There is plenty of pleasure, plenty of surprises, and the absence of any
formal requirement and/or collective rules in this system is the best
guarantee for an easy individual optimisation. :-)
Activation of C.P.C. Directory : we may consider that it is already
activated in the list of addresses (36 names at present time) established
thanks to Rob Duarte at http://www.rahji.com/noindex/pinholexmas.php3
Rob, is it possible to go on using this page for listing the C.P.C.
Directory ? Tell us if there are any problems! Will you accept to have this
URL page published on the Pinhole-discussion List so that more people
wishing to drop their address on the list may do it ?
If we cannot maintain the list on Rob's page we should ask Gregg if he can
host our C.P.C. Directory page on the Pinhole Visions site.
2] Spring 2002 Pinhole Print Swap :
I shall be (happily !) a lot shorter on this issue because the rules for a
Printswap have to be discussed by participants themselves before launching
the action. Just a few points :
Main principles : "organized" exchange between a limited number of
participants, with "clever" application of a set of rules and guidelines
applying to all participants; strong collective dimension.
Collective guidelines are about size, topics, deadline, contents (prints,
statements, etc) and above all a true "moral" involvement of each individual
towards the Group : if you are participant for a swap, you "must" send
prints to everyone in the group.
All these issues have to be defined and approved by all participants (= the
"preparation" phase) before activation of the Swap.
For each pinhole Printswap Group, there is a moderator whose tasks are to
co-ordinate discussions, set and update list of addresses, help members when
they meet problems, and inject some energy in the Group.
The number of participants in a swap Group has to be limited : from
experience, 15 participants seem to be really a maximum; 10 /12 is a good
number.
The "state of mind" in a Print Swap is totally different from the free
spirit of the C.P.C.Directory action described above. I've noticed in the
recent posts that some of you would like to participate in the next Print
Swap. So, why not decide to prepare a new pinhole print swap which could be
completed in the 1st term of 2002.? I do not suggest a closer date because ,
from previous experiences, I know that constitution of the groups,
discussion of rules and realization take some time... And we have to
"finish" the 3 printswaps of 2001 yet + the Christmas cards exchange +...
My suggestion : to decide a Spring 2002 Pinhole Print Swap called S2PP
YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NEXT PINHOLE PRINT SWAP ?
For those of you who are interested in participating in this future
printswap, please make me know (we have time but the sooner, the better
since if we are numerous we shall have to share in different groups with a
moderator for each group).
I suggest that we do not bother the whole discussion-list with our printswap
stuff.
Please e-mail me at the following e-mail address (different from my e-mail
address for the list) :
jean.daubas@freesbee.fr
Subject : S2PP (it makes me earn a lot of time when sorting my
received e-mails !)
*********************************************************************
Obviously this short analysis and suggestion for a distinct 2 level action
are just my personal thoughts on the subject and are not an absolute
truth... it's why I shall be glad to read your comments, improvements,
critics, ...
I presume we are very close to decide the best solutions so that each of us
may find his (her) best way of getting maximum pleasure from "real" (enough
virtual stuff all around!) exchanges with other members of our marvellous
pinholers' community.
Thanks for your help, have good pinholing
Cheers from France
Jean

P.S. : I think Guy's suggestion for using the Forum set by Gregg at
http://www.pinholevisions.org/forum/index.php is a very good idea since a
lot of Pinhole-list readers are not necessarily interested in our Christmas
cards discussion.
Since there are still e-mails about this subject sent to the list, I post
the present e-mail both on the discussion-list and on the Forum thread.
Please use the Forum for discussing these issues. Thanks.
