Benefits and disadvantages are no different than comparing the same
formats/cameras when using glass lenses. It used to be thought that a 35mm
"lensless" image woud fall apart when enlarged. Many images being displayed
all over WWW tell us a different story, though.

If you are thinking in terms of "small format" = less "sharpness", the
workourounds are: a very clean, round, made using thin material, optimum
size pinhole. And in the case of zoneplate, it has to made for the exact
focal length you will use it for (or the other way around), clear rings
should have as little density as possible and black rings should be very
dark.
