Diffraction occurs when waves bend around an obstacle. In the ocean you can see the big waves ( the sun) bend around the point of land to the shore. On a calm sea the effect is minimal. Sunlight
will also be broken into different wavelengths (colors) to produce some spectacular effects on color film.
