I'm not sure this will help, but I have been pondering the slit problem.
What if you used two single edge razor blades screwed to a board. You could
cut slots in them and have an adjustable slit that you could set with an
automotive feeler gauge. If the razor blades do not give you a long enough
slit you could use wallpaper scraper blades (about 3" long). You would have
to do a little engineering, but that is right up our alley.
