They are all use to dealing with companies not individuals. Companies
regularly pay significantly more for merchandise than individuals. They do
this for reasons that span the realm from cronyism, to laziness, to just
don't care. Sometimes there is the old view of if it isn't more expensive
than regular people use it can't be "professional" quality.
The last one is VERY prevalent in the photo industry...

Does anyone in the world charge that much? You can oftentimes find them on
eBay for around $50 or so. I think that the $500 backs are the 6X12 backs,
or
some sort of oddball thing like that - not a regular 6X9 back.
