In the photography world "unnecessarily sturdy" is an oxymoron.
(Except for nature photography where you have to haul the tripod
a long distance over rough terrian...) I know what you mean by
worth it's price; one of my friends is a reformed professional
videographer (former TV station cameraman) with lots of his own
equipment. When I need a really good heavy tripod, I borrow
one of his!
