I have been using various forms of synthetic type materials (Yupo,
Denril MultiMedia Vellum, etc.) for several years for my carbon
tissue supports. Before that I used a plain non-adhesive wall paper,
but this has become almost impossible to find, and it is a little
narrow for me in any event. The plastic supports have many
advantages, but one of the disadvantages is that drying time after
you make the tissue is very long, even when the humidity is low. The
same tissue on paper dries in about 1/4 of the time, even on fairly
heavy art papers, so I am thinking of switching back to paper. Also,
when the humidity is low the tissue may come off the support. So I am
thinking about switching back to paper.
Question is, does anyone know of a light and relatively inexpensive
paper with good wet strength that might work as the carbon support? I
really need good wet strength because for reasons of efficiency I
make my tissue in very large sheets, up to 24X36", and then cut it
down for use. The weight of a tissue with a wet height coating of 1
mm puts a lot of pressure on the paper when you pick it up to place
on a drying rack. One paper that does work nicely is the Strathmore
500 plate surface, but it a bit pricey.
