Chiming in here late. Just got back from a family gathering in Yosemite.
The internet would have interferred with spending quality time with the
relatives...and I am sure I would have had some with them if I had not taken
my 8x10 with me...
I have also noted the "swirl" a few times, but my images are usually very
busy -- no large areas of even tonality -- so I may not have noticed.
I only noticed the swirl after I actually was pouring the pigmented
gelatin...so I wrote it off to relatively poor distribution of the pigment.
Since stirring and bubbles kind of go hand-in-hand, my changes in the
process to try to get rid of swirl went towards an increased gentle stirring
and more time to allow bubbles to float up and pop.
For reducing bubbles, I prefer to have the pigmented gelatin sit in a glass
jar in a 105F waterbath for 4 , but better yet, 6 hours, with occasional
gentle stirring (I am using a magnetic stirrer now). I pour through a
doubled up stocking (4 layers) to catch any floaters and perhaps any stray
bubbles. "Swirl" does seem to be at a minimum if I can allow enough time
and stirring in the process. I may have been incorrect as to the cause of
the swirl, but whatever I do seems to help minimize it.
Also--I initially melt the gelatin slowly in a 105 to 110F waterbath. With
a couple gentle stirs, it takes 30 to 45 min. to melt enough for me to add
the sugar and pigment.
